Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif left Biarritz, French BFM TV reported, citing diplomatic sources.
According to them, during a blitz visit, the head of Iranian diplomacy held almost three-hour talks with French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian and talked with French President Emmanuel Macron for half an hour. During the meetings, the situation around the Iranian nuclear program was discussed. The meeting with Macron was also attended by diplomatic advisers from the UK and Germany.
In addition, a meeting was held with French Finance Minister Bruno Le Mer, with whom Zarif discussed the problems surrounding the European financial system INSTEX, the purpose of which is to bypass the sanctions imposed by Washington against Tehran.
In a message from the Office of the President of France, the talks held gave a positive assessment and expressed a desire to continue contacts.
Zarif himself called the outcome of this visit a manifestation of Tehran’s active diplomacy.
“Iran’s active diplomacy in search of constructive cooperation continues. After lengthy negotiations with Le Dian (French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian – IF) and Finance Minister (Bruno Le Mer – IF) I met with Macron (French President Emmanuel Macron – IF). Then a joint briefing was held for (representatives – IF) of Great Britain and Germany, “Zarif tweeted.
“The road ahead is difficult, but it’s better to try,” the Iranian minister concluded.
Earlier it became known that on Sunday at the summit of the Group of Seven, at the invitation of French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif arrived.
A representative of the Champs Elysees informed that Zarif had flown to Biarritz to negotiate with Le Drian “to discuss recent initiatives by the presidents of Iran and France.”
The Iranian Foreign Ministry, in turn, said that meetings with representatives of the American delegation at Zarif were not provided and that he would return to Tehran on Sunday evening in order to prepare for a trip to China.
